What is nail fungus?

Don’t be embarrassed if you have toenail or fingernail fungus, it’s much more common than you think. About 25% of the population suffers from nail fungus. Fungi are tiny organisms visible only through a microscope, and many types can cause nail infections. Sometimes they live on your skin without causing issues, but if they multiply in one area, an infection can develop.

Nail fungus, its formal name is onychomycosis, invades your nails. A fungal infection can affect part of the nail, an entire nail, or even multiple nails. While it’s usually painless, untreated infections can become increasingly uncomfortable, making it difficult to wear shoes, walk, or stand for long periods.

Since fungi thrive in dark, warm environments, toenails are more commonly affected than fingernails. Toes also receive less blood flow than fingers, making it harder for your body to detect and fight the infection. Additionally, men are more likely to develop fungal infections than women.

Symptoms of nail fungus?

If you get nail fungus, you’re likely to see one or more of the following changes to your nails:

  • White spots or streaks on the nail surface
  • Yellow or brownish discoloration of the nails
  • Thickened and misshapen nails
  • Brittle, cracked or crumbling nails
  • Pain in the affected nails

Causes of nail fungus and the risk factors

Nail fungus is caused by three types of fungi: dermatophytes, yeasts, and non-dermatophyte moulds. These parasitic organisms do not require sunlight to grow and thrive in dark, damp environments such as swimming pools, locker rooms, and showers. Toenails are particularly vulnerable, especially when feet remain warm and damp for extended periods. Fungal nail infections can be contagious and may spread to nearby nails and skin.

Certain factors increase the risk of developing a fungal nail infection, including chronic conditions like diabetes, circulatory issues, immune deficiencies, a history of athlete’s foot, or excessive perspiration. Wearing tight-fitting shoes, such as trainers, for long hours—especially if your feet sweat—also raises the risk.

As we age, nails lose moisture and develop cracks, making them more susceptible to infection. This is why children, whose nails are typically stronger, healthier, and less prone to cracking, are less likely to develop nail fungus. If your nails are naturally fragile, cracked, or weakened due to injury, dermatophytes can more easily infect them.

How to prevent nail fungus and maintain healthy nails

Making a few simple lifestyle changes can help to prevent fungal nail infections. Taking good care of your nails by keeping them well-trimmed and clean is an effective way to reduce the risk. Here are a few other tips to maintain healthy nails and prevent infection:

  • Avoid wearing synthetic tights or socks
  • Choose socks made of natural material like cotton or wool
  • If your socks get damp, change them to keep your feet dry
  • Wear sandals or dry airy shoes made of a material that allows moisture to escape
  • Do not share shoes, socks or nail scissors with others
  • Always dry your feet thoroughly, especially between your toes
  • Wear shower sandals in public pools and showers; avoid walking barefoot in public areas
  • Do not leave nail polish on for too long, and avoid layering new polish over old
  • Prevent nail injuries by wearing properly fitting shoes and avoiding overly short nail trimming
  • Before bed, wash and dry your feet or hands thoroughly
